When I first tried Abuse it appeared like it wasn't all that great of a game. But to my surprise, I got addicted very quickly. The game play takes some getting used to because you use the keyboard and the mouse at the same time. The arrow keys are used to move around and the mouse is used to aim your weapon. I did however find the game to be somewhat easy, seeing as how I was able to beat the shareware game the first time I played it.
Descent
(Interplay)
Descent is a lot like Doom, but the game play is completely different. Unlike Doom where you are limited in looking around, you have full 360 degree viewing. This game can make a person very sick if you get motion sickness. Also the game play can take a bit of getting used to. You almost need an extra hand to help out. The levels are very large and it will take more than one sitting to beat this game. Also, if you get bored with the normal levels then you can hop on your favorite ftp site and usually find all kind of new levels to try. Descent is a good game that does take some getting use to, so I would suggest to try the shareware version first before you buy the game.
Descent II
(Interplay)
Descent II is a lot like the first the Descent, but this version has new weapons, new enemies, and all new levels. If you liked the first Descent then you'll like this one even better. The only thing I didn't like about Descent II, is that you need a much better computer than you did for the first Descent.
Doom
(ID Software)
Well, what can I really say about this game. It has been out for a long time and if you haven't tried this or at least heard of it, then you must be stuck in the dark ages. When Doom came out, it immediately became a major, major hit. It set the pace for hundreds of other games that came out afterward. If you like blood and gore then this game is for you. The game control is simple and easy to handle and the graphics are decent even though they are only flat bitmap images. The biggest thing about this game is that you can go to many different ftp sites and download many different wad files for free to modify Doom to make it like a new game. This is definitely a game to have!
Duke Nukem 3D
(3D Realms)
Duke Nukem 3D is another great game that is a lot like Doom. Compared to the old games of Duke Nukem, I'm glad 3D Realms decided to go with the new design and game play. The game play and graphics can be compared with Doom II. Although the violence and language is much worse in Duke Nukem. To compensate for this, 3D Realms put in an adult lock option that parents can use to hide the vulgar language and nudity from the children. This game is great fun and is definitely a must have!
Quake
(ID Software)
Quake is ID's new Doom. To say the least, it is awesome. The graphics blow away any 3D, first person view game that was ever made so far and the game play is just like Doom, so there's nothing new to get use to. Plus, when ID made Quake they also made QuakeC available to the public. With QuakeC you can use the Quake engine to make your own game. Right now, there are some add-ons available for Quake that people have made (just like Doom). I will be reviewing some of these in the next issue of inSite. This game is a definite must have!
Worms and Worms Plus
(Ocean)
Worms is a game that most people have never heard of but eventually everyone will. This game looks a lot like Lemmings (Sunsoft) but the game play is entirely different. You are a team of four worms that take on one to three other teams of worms. Worms will generate a landscape for each match and if you don't like the landscape then you can pick a different one. The weapons, vary from a bazooka to cluster bombs to just a simple shove. There are also defense items to use against the other teams. You can play either by yourself or you can up to four people playing at one time. The original Worms was great but when Ocean released Worms Plus (or Worms Reinforcements as it's also called) they made a great game even better. They added options to do such things as changing the voices of the worms to network and modem play. This game is an absolute must buy! This is by far the best game and most addictive game I have ever played.
These images are the rating system I have. The red stop light means that the game
is awful and probably wouldn't be any fun to play. The yellow stop light means that the game
was ok and that it may be very fun to some but others may not like it. And of course, the green
light means that the game is a must have! My opinions about these games are just that, opinions, but if you have any suggestions about what I can do to make Test Drive better, just email me at: nsmith@twd.net.
